During the discovery phase of a project sometimes it can be hard to see how the pieces are going to come together. It's important for us, as designers, to have confidence in the processes we're using. I had a surprising reminder of that the other day when I was trying a recipe for Dulce de Leche cookies for the first time. The instructions read:
Start by mixing the ingredients with a food-processor. Then remove and
begin to work the dough (crumbs at this point) by hand. At first, it
will seem that dough will never appear. Be patient, and the pieces
will come together. Although, do work quickly so that the butter does
not melt.
It was a good reminder for me, as I was in the process of going through my research and I was starting to pull together my findings into something I could move forward with. I had been having some trouble seeing how two particular parts of my research were going to merge with the rest of the pieces to make one solid solution. With some focused attention they did come together in a surprising way and it was something I was happy with.
It was also a good reminder that sometimes the best thing to do when we're incubating ideas is to step back and get our hands dirty with something else for a couple hours.
